Surfing vs. Paddleboarding

Surfing vs. Paddleboarding

Is there a conflict between surfers and paddle boarders? I stayed away from Paddle boarding for longer than I should have although I was encouraged by my closest friends and fellow surfers. Why was I so stuck in my purest thought of surfing is the only way? I have always been one to encourage trying new ideas, doing something different. My first take was that I did not have the cash but have since bought two used paddle boards for about $600 each! Then there was the idea of using it to paddle surf or cruise on flat water for amazing exercise. I am a surfing purest I guess. I did enjoy paddle surfing but if the waves are big enough to surf, that is still my preference! Notice that I did not say always … I have come a long way.

The root of this potential conflict for me, stems from my early days of learning to surf in the late 70’s. The longboards always caught the waves earlier and got the majority of waves if you use true surfing etiquette. My buddy Bob and I would always be bummed when we saw those longboards in the water. I don’t see a conflict anymore and there should be room for both but like the longboards of the past, paddleboards will catch waves even earlier so I just keep my distance. Who knows, in my future my preference may change to paddle surfing!

Staying open minded!
