Have you ever had the opportunity to meet a legend in a hobby, sport or activity that you love?
Attending any Surf Expo event (Sept. or Jan.) you are bound to see some known industry leaders from surfboard shapers, surfers and others. Last January it was Tony Little who pumps up the nutrition and exercise products and this year Shaun Tomson was there again adding credibility to the sports main exposition of the year. One year, the Gulf of Mexico had waves around the time of the expo and as I paddled in the water, Shaun Tomson paddled right by my friend and I in Sunset Beach, Treasure Island. That was cool!
This year I got to meet Robert August (pictured on the right), surfer, shaper and star of the classic 1966 Surf Documentary Endless Summer filmed by Bruce Brown. It is a must have as two surfers, Hynson and August are filmed as they travel around the world searching for the perfect wave. A must have in the surfers movie collection. It never gets old! Not only did I get a chance to meet the legend himself but I also was able to purchase a signed poster by Robert and two others from the Endless Summer Movie. Way, way cool.
My first dive into the longboard scene came when I lived in Daytona Beach. My buddy connected me with Joe Nuzzo from Suncoast Surfshop in Treasure Island Florida. Joe and Robert go way back. Joe was able to have Robert shape and make a custom surfboard for me … the model “One I Ride” was part of our conversation when we met at the Surf Expo. It was a thrill to meet the legend. If you have the chance to meet your legend, don’t pass up the opportunity, you will not regret it!
